Somalia announces May 2027 presidential election

Somalia’s electoral commission has scheduled the country’s presidential election for 15 May 2027, Reuters reported on 15 October. Commission chairperson Abdikarim Ahmed Hassan also announced parliamentary elections for 15 April 2027, covering both legislative chambers. The timetable follows constitutional changes approved in March that potentially extended President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s term by one year, drawing opposition criticism. The elections are planned against a difficult security backdrop, with al Shabaab continuing its insurgency against the central government.
