Dakar countdown gathers pace as Africa prepares for first Youth Olympics

Senegal is approaching a historic sporting milestone, with the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games scheduled to begin on 31 October. The competition will run until 13 November, becoming the first Olympic sports event staged on African soil. The opening ceremony is planned for Stade Abdoulaye Wade in Diamniadio, where the Youth Olympic cauldron will be lit. According to the Association of National Olympic Committees, the flame will subsequently be located at Corniche West, the Games’ festival site and cycling venue. Beyond competition, Dakar 2026 will involve young people through cultural activities, education and volunteering. The event places African youth at the centre of an international sporting gathering, offering Senegal an opportunity to showcase both its sporting ambitions and its cultural identity.
